OPTIONS IN BUSINESS
Sherri Tran, BBA, 2020
As the school year is quickly coming to an end, many students are still stranded in the first stage of adulthood; where do we go from here? While plenty gain recognition for earning internships, part-time jobs, or full-time jobs, a large proportion of students still lay in the shadow with no clue as to what they should do. Many questions may arise when taking the different possible pathways into consideration. What can each discipline bring me in terms of employment? What are the benefits? What does each discipline entail in terms of responsibilities and skills? Which one is for me?
On February 17, 2017, UBS hosted ‘Options in Business,’ inviting professionals from six different disciplines together to give students a taste of their potential future. I had the pleasure of interviewing two of the many esteemed guests to potentially bring you a glimpse of the field of accounting and consulting.
While the two disciplines are different, many similarities arose during the separate interviews. The aspect of time management is stressed; find a suitable balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and potential work experience to diversify your skill set and knowledge. However, regardless of skill and talent, many comparable aspects emerge in terms of enjoying work, something to consider as a student trying to enjoy school. It is important to find an environment that resonates with you. What works for somebody does not mean it will work for everybody. Surround yourself with the things you love, the people you wish to work with, and a workplace to suits your needs and desires to ultimately build an enjoyable workplace you look forward to every day.
