York University was selected to host a local edition of the Hult Prize, the world’s largest student competition for the creation of new social businesses, for the third year in a row. This past week, we saw numerous great ideas which harnessed the power of energy to improve the lives of millions of people around the world. The Hult Prize@ York executive team is happy to announce the winners of the competition, Team Spark! A team compiled of second year business students Angel Huang, Zainab Jangda, Inaara Hasmani and Kevin Wu. They presented an initiative called “Flow”, which harnesses the energy of human migration and wowed the judges through their creativity and idea feasibility. The annual Hult Prize awards one million dollars in start-up funding to the team of students that develops the most radical and breakthrough idea to solve one of our world’s toughest social challenges.

Team Spark, the winner of our intra-campus event will automatically advance to compete in one of fifteen regional finals happening around the world next March.  One winning team from each host city will then move onto a summer business incubator, where participants will receive mentorship, advisory and strategic planning as they create prototypes and set-up to launch their new social business.  A final round of competition will be hosted in September 2018, where the winning team is to be awarded the $1,000,000 prize.

Every York University student still has an opportunity to move on to the next round. Whether you competed in our on-campus event and were unable to emerge victorious, or were unable to compete all together, you can still apply at the following link: http://www.hultprize.org/apply/. It is not every day that you are presented with an opportunity to legitimately help the lives of millions of people around the world, so do not let it pass you by! Applications are due on December 23rd, 2017.
